According to the Superintendent of the Institute of Historic and Artistic Patrimony - IPHAN Margaret Escobar, thegeopark, an official seal of UNESCO, is a tool for the conservation of areas endowed with important geological and paleontological evidence of evolution of the Earth and also aims to promote education, social inclusion, popular science and tourism, ensuring the sustainability of the site.
The GeoparkBodoquena/Pantanal, with an area of 39 square kilometers, has several characteristic features of a geopark along the lines of UNESCO, as the presence of fossils of giant sloths, tigers, saber-tooth and mastodons. There are even fossils of the first living things that arose on the planet - more than 560 million years, one being thecorumbella in homage to the city of Corumbá, where the fossil was discovered.
The site also contains numerous archaeological and historical sites relevant to tell the story of the mining in Corumbá and the Brazilian/Paraguayan war and also holds a rich cultural heritage, like the daily life of the thePantanal man, and the graphics and ceramics by Indians Terena and kadiwéu.
The representatives of UNESCO will be in MatoGrosso do Suluntil June 21st. The first attraction to be visited by the technicians is the Buraco das Araras, on day 19 after passing by the caves of Bonito and the culture of the Pantanal at Corumbá.
* Geosites are well-defined geographical points, where there are one or more elements of geodiversity with singular value from the standpoint of scientific, educational, cultural and tourist.
